Laparoscopic surgery, also known as Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) /  Bandaid Surgery / Keyhole surgery, is a surgical technique in which invloves performing an operation far from the actual affected location, through small incisions elsewhere in the patients body.

On of the key devices used in laparoscopic surgery is the laparoscope, it is a long, fiber optic, cable system which allows the surgeon a remote view of the affected area by snaking the cable from a distant, but easily accessible location on the patients body. The main advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery is the reduction of pain and hemorrhaging due to the smaller incisions,  and recovery times are generally much shorter.

The two main types of laparoscope devices are:

  • Telescopic Rod Lens System - Connected to a video camera (Either a single chip or a three chip).
  • Digital Laparoscope - The charge-coupled device is placed at the end of the laparoscope.
